The bank was founded by Sorabji Pochkhanawala in December, 1911 and Pherozesha Mehta was its first Chairman. In fact, Central Bank of India is said to be the 1st commercial bank in the country to be owned and regulated completely by the Indians. In 1923, Central Bank of India acquired Tata industrial Bank. The bank was nationalized in 1969 by the national government along with thirteen other banks of the country. Besides, the bank is playing an active role in the promotion of the agricultural sector as well as the medium, small and large scale industries. Again, it has introduced several self employment policies to facilitate employment amidst the educated young citizens of the country.
